Why

Flexibility means more than just one thing.

It’s adapting to people’s time requirements, people’s individual requirements, it can be permanent, temporary, or adhoc requirements.

How do you make people feel comfortable to ask for what works for them.

Flexibility mindset - get people to try doing something that breaks the norm/trend of a rigid work day to work out how flexibility can work best for them.

You may have come from a team that was so structured you didn’t even realise you could make a different decision than the one offered to you.

What

Clear guidance and overview of how you define flexible working in your business, what it looks like and any policies that are relevant. Clarity is key. Be explicit, intentional and honest.

99.99% of people want to go above and beyond, and do the best they can to be successful (specifically if they feel they are genuinely rewarded for that work). We shouldn’t design ways of working that are designed for the 0.01% of folks who may have nefarious intentions.

There is a beneficial cycle towards flexibility around the ā€œhowā€ in service of the outcome.
