A 1:1 is a regular opportunity for managers and reports to meet one-to-one and check in on a few things including:
These are a safe space to share, give & receive feedback and remove blockers or resolve in-flight issues.
We want to build a culture of continuous feedback at [company] and 1:1’s offer us the best possible chance of ensuring a regular drumbeat of opportunity for 2 people to meet and discuss things like performance, development, growth, and feedback as real-time as possible.
This means we can help spot & remove blockers and problems as quickly as possible, but also means we can run regular check-ins on goals & objectives which impact heavily on performance, and therefore growth & progression.
Without full commitment to these from both managers and their team members, we believe communication, performance and progression will suffer, which is something we want to avoid.
We ask team members to keep the following principles in mind for 1:1’s
1️⃣ Focus on IC, not Manager They are primarily time for IC’s, not for Managers. Managers should bear this in mind.
2️⃣ Preparation is vital They should be prepared for in advance & taken seriously to maximise time & energy.
3️⃣ Actions & Accountability They should be documented properly. They feed heavily into growth & performance
⚙️ Setup
Our advice to teams here is that managers & IC’s meet for a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly 1:1 for 30 mins. Which you choose will depend a little on things like support needed & level of competency. We trust you to make a call on that between the two of you.

For Managers: Please never cancel or re-arrange a 1:1 unless it’s absolutely necessary. We stress, these meetings are not yours to cancel. They are primarily for your team.
