HR work lands when it is connected to the business priorities already being discussed in the room.
───────────
If we want to be heard, we need to speak the language of the business. In exec meetings, the conversation usually runs on revenue, margin, retention, delivery speed, risk, runway and growth.
When we talk about engagement, hiring, performance, capability or culture without connecting them to those priorities, the business hears "HR activity".
Useful, but does not 'feel' urgent 😟
And that's how we become the "people update" in the last 10 minutes of the exec meeting. Or the item that gets pushed to next week. Again.
Important reminder for all HR leaders:
We are the only function that works across all 3 core business priorities:
We hire, shape capability, develop leaders, design structures and build performance systems that help the business build product, sell product and grow revenue and profit.
But we have to make that connection visible 👀.
